Sullivan Studios’s Film & TV soundstages and backlot are located in the growing Toronto neighbourhood of Scarborough, which sits east of the downtown core and is part of the Greater Toronto Area (“GTA”).
The studio sits specifically in the Golden Mile district, currently a commercial district with a history of being one of Canada’s first model industrial parks.
Before World War II, it was farmland; during the war it was the site of many munitions plants to support Canada’s involvement in the war ¹ ; and after the war, it was sold to the private industry to develop the area as “The Golden Mile” and numerous factories producing consumer goods took up residence.
At the same time, parts of the area were being developed for retail uses, including the Golden Mile Plaza and the Eglinton Square Shopping Centre ². The Golden Mile Plaza would become the largest shopping center in Canada, and the first to house a movie theatre and a bowling alley. ³
Currently, the Eglinton Town Centre, also nearby, provides access to many retail stores, a movie theatre and a diverse selection of food options. Speaking of food, due to Scarborough’s beautifully multicultural population, it’s quickly becoming a foodie hotspot.
Additionally, Scarborough is home to the Toronto Zoo and other nature escapes such as: the Scarborough Bluffs, the Rouge National Urban Park and Birch Cliff ⁴. While filming at Sullivan Studios, enjoy what Scarborough and the Greater Toronto Area have to offer!
